The Children of Auschwitz-Birkenau
The most gut-wrenching experience at the concentration camps was an exhibit dedicated to the children. In an empty white room, artists recreated sketches that were found all over the camps, usually hidden, and all done by children. The only thing these pictures have in common is that all the children who made them were killed. Most of the children didn't fully understand what was going on; this was the world through their eyes…
This last picture was taken in a adjoining exhibit. It is the Book of Names, and lists 4.2 million (out of more than 6 million) jews murdered during the Holocaust. The description includes the name, where and when they were taken, and when (if known) and where they were killed. Each page is 4 ft. high; the entire book is split into two sides, each one is roughly 20 ft. long. An article with more information on both exhibits can be found here.
